Holobionts: the role of terrestrial isopods and their microbiome in toxicity handling
Résumé
Species inhabiting contaminated environments possess important adaptations that enable them to survive in such environments. Agricultural and industry activities along with the effluents from the Estarreja Chemical Complex (ECC) have changed and shaped the local environment characterized by high amounts of metals and metalloids (i.e. As, Hg, Pb and Zn), nitrates and even PCBs, making it the perfect site to investigate the adaptation mechanisms of the inhabiting organisms. Terrestrial isopods and their microbiome may be considered holobionts that may provide useful information regarding survival mechanisms.
Complying with “Theme 3: Biodiversity Evolution”, the present project is divided into two phases. In the first phase a cross transference between holobionts from contaminated and non-contaminated areas will allow to determine the impact of the microbiome on isopod survival in such environments. In a second phase a metagenome analysis will determine the species present in the microbiome, thus allowing future research based on the findings.
