Titre
EVOC: Eradication and valorisation of invasive crayfish
Résumé
Invasive species cause severe problems for native fauna and flora and significantly alter natural ecosystems, through competition or predation. Invasive species may also be vectors of diseases to which they are immune but that play a negative impact in native species (Correia 1993). The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkia) native from USA has been introduced in Spain in the 70’s but has spread throughout the Iberian Peninsula watersheds.
The EVOC project is a Citizen Science approach for Estarreja population providing the necessary tools for monitoring and controlling the population of crayfish in the region. This will be possible by monitoring water lines for this species, analysing them for their nutritional content and proving information regarding its culinary use and preparation.
EVOC is expected to provide researchers with ecological information regarding this species and to increase environmental awareness and even provide an additional source of food supply to the populations.
